-HORN ROAD TO HELL AND ASCENSION PEAK PONDS (OS ANCARES)

Distance: 18 km route
Duration: 6 hours
Difficulty: Hard
Description route:

started this high mountain route starting from the beautiful village of Piornedo, which is the village of Lugo province with the highest number of pallozas, Ancares traditional buildings.

From palloza near the museum, we take a path that leads us to the source first and then the bridge Landeirón the same name. The trail runs along the hillside amid beautiful landscapes sighting most of the villages in the valley: Donís, Robledo, Vilar ...

After 1 hour of walking, we Vilarello, located at 1055 meters, with interesting examples of traditional architecture among which a number of pallozas and granaries thatched roof, and unfortunately almost in total are demolished or clear abandonment, motivated by the low conservation interest by the authorities and competent authorities, which are disappearing, leaving traditional flagship construction, important and ancient of all the Northwest Peninsula.

After passing through the village and see the attractive existing set by the Savior's Chapel (chapel, palloza, granary and traditional house), go to the top of the village to take the old road that connected the valley Vilarello Ortigal River.

The road begins to ascend slowly and runs down the slope of the mountain with spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and villages. We will move forward to link up in a curve with a track that climbs to the mountain that is what we have to follow.

At this point, if we stop, we can see now in front of the spectacular Ortigal River Valley, one of the most important woodlands are preserved in Ankara, and also in the background, the imposing mass of the Horn of Doom, one of the main peaks of the mountains, with 1850 m. altitude, and with it, stuck, Pico Pools, somewhat lower, with 1840 m.

will now play continuously up the track until you reach a time when the track on a curve deviates upward We continued down a path that follows the front. The road becomes more narrow until you reach a small field with a cottage in ruins. Here the road becomes a path that continues to rise slowly with some difficulty as the trail is slightly stepped and left so we must be careful not to miss.

Finally, as a reward after exercise, get to the Brañas of Vilarello, at 1535 m. tall, with an old ruined cottage, which is located along the foothills of peak Horn of Doom, and where we can relax and enjoy wonderful views of the mountains. Above

we can glimpse the Golada of Mouth Field, located between peak and Horn Spear Cursed, and that was the old way of communication with the down Leon Burbia Lakes.

Now it's up to almost mountain pass through, a path difficult to find and a bit lost and abandoned, which goes up sharply.

Once on the hill, to 1738 meters, the views are fabulous: we see everything in front of Burbia Leon Valley lakes with the same name in front of us. To the left and right peak Lanza have the Horn of Doom, where we are headed.

We take a path bordering the Horn Cursed by the right to go to another small pass that connects with the Pico Pools. Since that first hill climb easily up the Pico or Pico das Pools Ponds, to 1840 m, from which we can see clearly the Penedois, three bishops and Penarrubia. We got out of Pico

Puddles the little hill and now I got on the Horn of Doom, which the locals call Pico do Campo. From the summit, we can see almost the entire ridge of Ancares, with the imposing Mostalla the merits, the highest peak in the Ancares Lugo. We also have great views of the Peak Country Vedual Longo and deeper.

return by the same way to the Boca Country hill and continue along a little path that runs along the peak patent Lanza's left. This trail goes leads with little effort and comfortably to the mountains of villous and Agulleiro, where we have a different perspective of all the peaks and valleys that go riding, and where we can contemplate the majesty of Mostalla peak, with 1935 meters of altitude.

continue until you reach a point where we can go down to the river valley Cimeira da Veiga, which is aimed at Piornedo and where the Shack Piornedo mesh, so-called Cabana of Extremadura.

From here the road, wider, reaching down to the beautiful countryside of Camporredondo, through which the river Cimeira Veiga. Remains only a half hour walk to reach, finally, to Piornedo, end of this spectacular route.

THE Palloza, traditional construction

are considered as one of the earliest constructions of the European continent, valuable ethnographic and historical.

are constructions made of stone, wood and thatched with rye straw adapted to mountain conditions in which men and animals lived together.

plant have round or oval, with no corners, the stone wall with mud settled, with no windows and an impressive wooden deck assembled and fixed by wedges with a thatched roof shingles attached to the vincallo, rope made of the same straw.

are ingenious constructions, everything here is studied and planned: animals, with their warmth, and the thatched roof insulation, contribute the temperature is 14 º C when the outside marked 11 below zero. Are constructed to tilt the animal deposicións salted abroad and to slide the snow and water. They adapt well to land on a slope and have a good aerodynamic offer little wind resistance. Do not have a fireplace and the smoke kept very well covered with straw, dry straw, protects the wood and prevents bred rodents.

However, one of the major problems of these houses has been the process of replacing the thatched roof, the Teito, difficult task to perform which requires the collaboration of several people, which together with the advanced age of the few remaining teitadores and a shortage of rye, causes these buildings are being lost and are replaced the thatched roofs of other asbestos.

teito process started by the mesh size in the month of August, the corn shelling process, which took place in a paved or aira. To make it, was used an instrument called a "mesh" of wood with which to extract beat rye grain. Once meshed, the straw is gathered into bundles or "Manizales" and tied with a rope of straw, "vincallo", keeping in palleiras until Teitan start. A cover could bear of 5000 to 10000 kilos of straw. All this if we allowed the fire, great enemy of these homes, with breathtaking fire as Suárbol (León), formerly pallozas, razed in 1957, also in Lot (León) in 1965 and Water Country (León) 1989, village where they had just restore pallozas.
